- Aids digestion
Boldo (Peumus boldus) is a shrubby evergreen tree that is native to the Andean regions of Chile and Peru and grows to heights of 6-8m. It produces small, berrylike fruit - but it is the leaves which are used by herbalists.
In Chile it is used to support healthy liver function and to aid digestion, and is also considered to be a general tonic. In Brazil, Boldo is used for a variety of disorders including liver problems, constipation, flatulence, stomach and intestinal cramps.
Boldo has many active plant chemicals, including many alkaloids, but much of the biological activity of the plant has been attributed to a single alkaloid called boldine.
Boldo has become a popular remedy for hangovers and is considered to be an excellent liver supportive and detoxifying herb. Boldo is frequently used to treat water retention problems, and may also boost metabolism and for these reasons it may be helpful to those trying to lose weight.
